Cath Hughes | Things we found at the lake
July 4—August 28

Things we found at the lake is a series that twists the traditional summer pastime of swimming at the lake with folklore and fantasy. Mundane activity at the lake is juxtaposed with Hughes own cultural heritage, traditions and mythology; the Hobby Horse from British folklore, the Morris dance or Herne the Hunter with a stag’s head. Hughes also re-imagines the lake with archetypal Canadian wildlife by including beavers, loons and Canadian geese in the lakes.A string of dualities runs through the work, reality/fantasy, the mundane/mythological, beauty/ugliness, Canadian/British, the known/unknown, safe/sinister, surface/illusion and contemporary/historical. Visit the library to view this illusive exhibition, then head to the bookshelves to learn more about the folklore that inspired the work. About Cath HughesCath Hughes is a British-Canadian contemporary painter currently living and working in Vancouver, BC.
